DMSE Digest: Frontiers is a quarterly publication that seeks to connect with alumni and forge ties with friends of the department.

The Digest returns after a summer break with news of a new MIT Materials Research and Engineering Center led by Rafael Jaramillo and Caroline Ross; the renovation of Polina Anikeeva’s former lab, now home to Tania Lopez-Silva’s research program; and research on green ammonia production, AI materials discovery, sodium-metal batteries, and more.

Fall 2026
MIT is awarded a new Materials Research Science and Engineering Center from the National Science Foundation, uniting materials research to tackle global challenges. New DMSE research includes an AI tool for developing consistently stable materials and a low-carbon approach to ammonia production. DMSE also mourns the loss of Assistant Professor Thomas Rose.
