Lila Sciences, a startup co-founded by Rafael Gómez-Bombarelli, is at the forefront of efforts to use AI-directed, automated laboratories to plan, run, and analyze experiments—aiming to dramatically accelerate the notoriously slow process of discovering new materials for energy, sustainability, and computing, writes David Rotman. “If they succeed, these companies could shorten the discovery process from decades to a few years or less, helping uncover new materials and optimize existing ones.”
