Biography

Justin Lavallee manages the DMSE Breakerspace, a characterization lab where undergraduate students can get their hands on introductory-level instruments to explore the world of materials.

A design generalist, Lavallee has been at MIT since 2011. He has taught a range of hands-on subjects at the intersection of design and technology, from exploring the use of industrial robots in novel manufacturing processes to the design of small autonomous vehicles. He joined DMSE in 2022. He earned a BA in legal studies from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a Master of Architecture from Harvard University Graduate School of Design. If he’s not in the lab, Lavallee can be found biking along the Charles River to his home in Brighton, cooking for his family, or paddling a canoe.
