Far East Deep South: A Film Screening and Discussion with Producer Baldwin Chiu

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Collaborative (DMSE-DEIC) in collaboration with the MIT Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Visiting Scholars and Professors Program, the MIT Asian Pacific American Employee Resource Group (APA-ERG), and the Institute for Community and Equity Office (ICEO) welcomes you to a screening of the award-winning documentary film Far East Deep South, followed by a discussion with producer Baldwin Chiu.

This film is a powerful story of belonging, migration, untold narratives, interracial solidarity, and rediscovering roots in unlikely places, through a family’s story of Chinese immigration in the Mississippi Delta in the early 20th century during the Jim Crow and Chinese Exclusion era. Situated in a region and time period critical to understanding the complexity of industrial environmental pollutants, air, and water contamination, this film provides an understanding of the diverse interconnected social, economic, and cultural experiences of different racial and ethnic groups.

There will be a reception with light refreshments following the discussion.
