Match! XRD Analysis

Your new Match! license is a permanent license, i.e. you can use the current version of the software as long as you like. In addition, your license includes free-of-charge software updates until September 30, 2024 (update permission time).

First please check the minimum system requirements:

  • Personal Computer with Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, 8 or 10 operating system (separate versions are available for 64-bit and 32-bit)
  • 2 GB of RAM
  • Hard disk with minimum 2.5 GB of free disk space
  • Graphics resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels (1280 x 800 pixels or more recommended)
  • FullProf Release February 2018 (or later) required for Rietveld-refinements

In order to install Match!, please download and run the corresponding installer:

Please note the terms of the “End User License Agreement,” which will appear in the second dialog box!

After you have installed the main software, the program will run in the evaluation mode, which basically means that it will stop functioning 60 days after the installation. You still need to install your license file in order to transform the software into the fully personalized, unrestricted version.

The license file can be downloaded here: license_Match!.zip.

Close all Match! windows, then extract (“unzip”) the attached file “license_Match!.zip” to some temporary directory on your hard disk. Afterwards, please move the extracted file “yourlicense.lic” to the directory where you have installed the program (which is “C:\Program Files\Match3” by default). Note that you may need administrator privileges to perform this task!

Finally, please verify again that the license file “yourlicense.lic” is really present in the Match! program directory, then run Match!. This can be done e.g. by double-clicking the file “Match!.exe” in the directory where you have installed the program (e.g., “C:\Program Files\Match3”). Alternatively, you can run the software by clicking the Windows “Start” button, then on “Match3/Match!”.

Your license data should be displayed at the bottom of the splash screen (at program startup), to the right of the status bar at the bottom as well as in the “About Match!” dialog which can be opened from the “Help” menu.

Your license still needs to be registered on your computer, in order to prevent your license file from unauthorized copying. This is achieved by once running Match! as an administrator. (You will be reminded by a corresponding message when you run Match!)

In order to do so and remove the reminder message, you can e.g. open the Windows “Start” menu at “Match! 3”, right-click on “Match!”, then select “More / Run as administrator” in the context menu that opens. (As an alternative, you could also right-click on the “Match!” icon on the desktop, or display the content of the Match! program directory (which is “C:\Program Files\Match! 3” by default) and right-click on “Match!.exe”, then select “Run as administrator” from the context menu that opens.)

Enter your “Administrator” password when you are asked to do so (or simply confirm), then wait until a message is displayed that your license has been registered successfully. (If you have installed Match! in a different directory than the default, you have to adapt the command accordingly, of course).

In order to install and run Match! on macOS, please check the following minimum system requirements first:

  • Mac (Intel or Apple M1 processor) with macOS 10.12 “Sierra” operating system (or later)
  • 2 GB of RAM
  • Hard disk with minimum 2.5 GB of free disk space
  • Graphics resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels (1280 x 800 pixels or more recommended)
  • FullProf Release March 2018 (or later) required for Rietveld-refinements

The license file can be downloaded here: license_Match!.zip

In order to install Match!, please download the corresponding installer disk image from

https://www.crystalimpact.de/download/match3/demo/macOS/Match-3-osx-installer.dmg

Once the download has finished, please open the disk image in order to display its contents (e.g. by double-clicking on it), then run the installer “Match3.pkg” by double-clicking. Please follow the instructions on the screen, and note the terms of the “End User License Agreement”, which will appear in the second dialog box!

If you run the installer on macOS 10.14 “Mojave” (or later) in “dark mode”, some dialog elements (especially the buttons at the bottom) are hardly visible. Please switch over to the “light” mode before running the installer, or press the button (outline visible only) in the bottom-right corner of the installer window repeatedly until the installation starts.

Now that you have installed the main software, the program will run in the evaluation mode, which basically means that it will stop functioning 60 days after the installation. You still need to install your license file in order to transform the software into the fully licensed, unrestricted version.

Close all Match! windows, then extract (“unzip”) the attached file “license_Match!.zip” to the directory where you have installed the program (which is “/Applications/Match3” by default). Note that you may need administrator privileges to perform this task!

Afterwards, please verify again that the license file “yourlicense.lic” is really present in the Match! program directory, then run Match!. This can be done e.g. by double-clicking on the corresponding desktop symbol “Match!”, or alternatively using the Finder (Folder “/Applications/Match3”).

Your license data should be displayed at the bottom of the splash screen (at program startup), to the right of the status bar at the bottom as well as in the “About Match!” dialog which can be opened from the “Match!” program menu.

Your license still needs to be registered on your computer, in order to prevent your license file from unauthorized copying. This is achieved by once running Match! as an administrator. (You will be reminded by a corresponding message when you run Match!.)

In order to do so and remove the reminder message, please open a terminal window, then enter the command

sudo /Applications/Match3/Match\!.app/Contents/MacOS/Match\!

Enter you “root” password when you are asked to do so, and wait until a message is displayed that your license has been registered successfully. (If you have installed Match! in a different directory than the default “/Applications/Match3”, you have to adapt the command accordingly, of course).

https://www.crystalimpact.de/download/match3/demo/Linux_64bit/Match-3-linux-x64-installer.run.zip

Once the download has finished, please extract (unzip) the zip-file (which will create a new file “Match-3-linux-x64-installer.run”). Check that the file access permissions show that the file “Match-3-linux-x64-installer.run” can be executed. If this is not the case, please run the command “chmod a+x Match-3-linux-x64-installer.run”.

In addition, you need to install the software as “root” (administrator privileges required). In order to do so, either run a “su” command before running the installer (file “Match-3-linux-x64-installer.run”), or use “sudo”, e.g. by running “sudo Match-3-linux-x64-installer.run”.

When the installer is running, please follow the instructions on the screen, and note the terms of the “End User License Agreement”, which will appear in the second dialog box!

Now that you have installed the main software, the program will run in the evaluation mode, which basically means that it will stop functioning 60 days after the installation. You still need to install your license file in order to transform the software into the fully licensed, unrestricted version.

Close all Match! windows, then extract (“unzip”) the attached file “license_Match!.zip” to the directory where you have installed the program (which is “/opt/Match3”) by default). Note that you need administrator privileges to perform this task!

(You will be reminded by a corresponding message when you run Match!.)

In order to do so and remove the reminder message, please open a terminal window, then enter the command

sudo /opt/Match3/Match.sh

Enter your “root” password when you are asked to do so, and wait until a message is displayed that your license has been registered successfully. (If you have installed Match! in a different directory than the default “/opt/Match3”, you have to adapt the command accordingly, of course).

The file “license_information_Match.pdf” which is attached to this e-mail contains the serial number of your license and other customer data. Please keep it for future reference!

Match! can use the well-known software “FullProf” (J. Rodriguez-Carvajal, Physica B. 192, 55 (1993); http://www.ill.eu/sites/fullprof) to run Rietveld refinement calculations. If you would like to use this feature, you have to install FullProf (at least if it is not already present on your machine):

You can download and install FullProf directly from the FullProf web page (where you will also find detailed installation instructions):

http://www.ill.eu/sites/fullprof/php/downloads.html

As an alternative, you can also download and install FullProf from the Crystal Impact web page

https://www.crystalimpact.de/match/download.htm#download_fp

Simply follow the download and installation instructions given there for the corresponding platform (operating system you are using).

Match! identifies phases in a sample by comparing its powder diffraction pattern to reference patterns of known phases. Hence, it needs a so-called “reference database” in which these reference patterns are provided. There are several options for obtaining a reference database:

Match! is by default installed along with the COD-Inorganics reference database. The name of this reference database already indicates that it contains powder diffraction patterns calculated from inorganic crystal structure data (compounds without C-H-bonds) taken from the COD (“Crystallography Open Database”). This reference database is especially appropriate if you are typically analyzing mineral samples; it is used throughout the tutorial. All entries of the COD-Inorganics reference database contain atomic coordinates, based on which the corresponding powder diffraction patterns have been calculated. Besides this, for all entries, I/Ic-values have been calculated, so that a semi-quantitative analysis can be carried out.

If the COD-Inorganics reference database is not suitable for your requirements, you can download and install the full COD reference database from

https://www.crystalimpact.de/match/download.htm#refdb

As an alternative to the COD reference databases, you can of course also use any ICDD PDF database product (PDF relational database products only on Windows PCs), or the “old” ICSD/Retrieve database (released 1993-2002), if you have a valid license for it.

Finally, it is also possible to apply your own diffraction or crystal structure data in phase identification, by importing them into a so-called “user database”.

More detailed information about reference databases, the creation of a user database and the indexation is available in the tutorial handbook which can be opened from the “Help” menu.

Once you have installed the software on any of the three platforms, both a comprehensive online help (which can be accessed through the “Help” menu) as well as a manual are available as documentation. You can access the manual either from within Match! using the menu (“Help-Manual”) or directly by double-clicking on the file “Manual.pdf” in Match!’s program directory.

In addition, tutorial videos in which the most common operations are demonstrated are available at

https://www.crystalimpact.de/match/videos.htm

Finally, there are two basic keyboard shortcuts you should always keep in mind:

<F1> (<Cmd+?> on the Mac) will open the online help at the index page, so that you can easily search for information about a given keyword/issue.
<Ctrl+J> will display a table of all mouse operations and keyboard shortcuts that can be used.

Using these two shortcuts, you should be able to clarify most issues and questions.

Normally, you will be asked if you would like to unregister your license when uninstalling Match! from the computer. If you would like to manually unregister your license but keep your Match! installation, please do the following:
