The MIT MetLab is a shared metallurgical research and teaching facility supporting heat treating, specimen preparation, polishing, etching, and mechanical testing for metals and many other materials, including polymers, ceramics, electronics, and semiconductors. Used by researchers and students across MIT, the facility provides hands-on training and foundational support for materials science and engineering research.

Together with the MetLab, DMSE’s shared facilities support hands-on research and teaching across a wide range of materials systems. Details for each facility are provided below.

The LEM includes a variety of prototyping and machining equipment for fabrication, sample preparation, and general machining needs.
