Biography

Felice Frankel supports students, faculty, and postdocs in creating high-quality, impactful visuals for publications, the web, social media, and journal articles and covers. She also works with DMSE Communications to enhance image making for research and strengthen DMSE’s physical and online presence. In 3.022 (Essential Research Skills), she teaches the fundamentals of figure creation for research and organizes additional workshops on visual communication for students, faculty, and postdocs. 
 
A longtime photographer of scientific imagery, Frankel joined DMSE in 2024 as a visual science communication specialist. She has served as a photographer and research scientist at MIT since 1994, working primarily in the Department of Chemical Engineering while also supporting DMSE and the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Before MIT, she was a senior research fellow in Harvard University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences within the Initiative for Innovative Computing. She is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a Guggenheim Fellow. 
 
Frankel and her work have been featured in The New York Times, Wired, The Boston Globe, and NPR’s All Things Considered. She is the author of numerous books, most recently Phenomenal Moments, which explores the hidden beauty and brilliance of the science all around us through photography.
