Declaring a Major in Course 3, 3-A, or 3-C

For first-year students, declare the major according to the deadlines established by the Office of the First Year. For students wishing to change to Course 3, 3-A, 3-C from another major, submit a change of major form through the MIT Registrar.

Declaring a Double Major in Course 3, 3-A, or 3-C and another Major

Students should review the MIT Registrar's information about double majors. There are specific deadlines for declaring a double major; students should review the MIT Registrar's website for current information.

The DMSE Undergraduate Committee typically approves a maximum of 24 unit overlap between subjects in both major's requirements. The Committee may consider omitting subjects from this overlap restriction if the subjects are required, not elected (i.e. 18.03 Differential Equations). When preparing an application, students should ensure that they list all past, current, and future subjects in both major programs. First, submit the application for review by the other major department. Then, submit the double major application to the DMSE Academic Office (6-107). If you are not currently declared in Course 3, 3-A, or 3-C, attach a current grade report to your application.

Declaring a Minor

Students should review the MIT Registrar's information about declaring a minor. When ready to submit an application, students should contact Professor Jim LeBeau (Advisor, Minor in Materials Science and Engineering) or Dr. Max Price (Advisor, Minor in Archaeology and Materials). 

Declaring a HASS Concentration

Students should review the MIT Registrar's information about declaring a HASS concentration and the HASS Concentration in Archaeology and Archaeological Science.
