Requirements (Before Fall 2020)
In Fall 2020, changes to the DMSE curriculum were made which impact all students pursuing Courses 3, 3-A, 3-C, the Minor in Materials Science and Engineering, and the Minor in Archaeology and Materials. This page contains information for students who entered their DMSE academic program before Fall 2020. Students who began in Fall 2020 and after should consult Requirements (After Fall 2020). The following equivalencies have been established for students who may be impacted by the Fall 2020 curricular changes. These equivalencies are available to students and do not need to be approved by petition.

Course 3
Refer to the degree chart associated with the year in which you entered the major. In general, you need to complete a set of required subjects, restricted electives, and a capstone experience, as well as broader General Institute Requirements.

Capstone Experiences
Course 3 requires the completion of a capstone experience, either the Course 3 Internship Program or the Course 3 Undergraduate Thesis.
Course 3 Internship Program (3.930, 3.931)
This program provides academic credit for industry internships in Materials Science and Engineering conducted over the summer terms of the sophomore and junior year. Information sessions about how to participate in this program are offered in the fall and early spring semester. See past internships (PDF) (MIT only).
