Abstract

We investigated Foturan (R) glass ceramic as a promising substrate material for micro-solid oxide fuel cells (mu-SOFC), including processing and electrochemical characterization of free-standing mu-SOFC membranes. The Foturan (R) wet etching rate was determined to be 16 mu m/min. This results in 31 min etching to fabricate a free-standing mu-SOFC membrane. The maximum power output of mu-SOFC membranes was 209 mW/cm(2) at 550 degrees C with an open circuit voltage of 0.58 V.
