Research

Prof. Schuh’s group uses experiments, analytical theory, and computer simulations to explore the processing-structure-property relationships in structural metals. They are particularly interested in the role of structural disorder and its effect on mechanical properties. Their research covers many length scales, from long-range disorder in grain boundary networks, to the nanoscale disorder in amorphous and nanocrystalline alloys.

What happens when materials take tiny hits

When tiny particles strike a metal surface at high speed — for example, as coatings being sprayed or as micrometeorites pummeling a space station — the moment of impact happens so fast that the details of process haven’t been clearly understood, until now. A team of researchers at MIT has…

When bonding two pieces of metal, either the metals must melt a bit where they meet or some molten metal must be introduced between the pieces. A solid bond then forms when the metal solidifies again. But researchers at MIT have found that in some situations, melting can actually inhibit metal…
