Professor Caroline A. Ross will serve as Associate Head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, effective Oct. 13, 2011. She joined MIT in 1997, was promoted to full faculty in 2004, and is currently the Toyota Professor of Materials Science and Engineering. Her group works in spintronic and magnetooptical materials and devices and in templated self-assembly of block copolymers and other systems that can generate nanoscale structures spontaneously. She is a Fellow of the Materials Research Society, the American Physical Society, and the UK Institute of Physics.
