DMSE at MIT: A Historical and Cultural Perspective

Abstract:
Thomas Eagar, Professor of Materials Engineering and Engineering Systems, will discuss the department’s transformation from Mining and Geology in 1865 to Materials Science and Engineering in 1975.

Biography: 
Professor Eagar recently retired after 46 years on the DMSE faculty, having served as Department Head in 1989 and from 1995-2000. He came to MIT as a Freshman in 1968, thus his career as a student (UG and G) spans 54 years. He will describe the culture that existed when he began and how the Department increased its reputation, diversity and resources while he has been associated with the Department.
