Carbon Building Blocks

Prof. Jeff Grossman and colleagues have published a paper in Scientific Advances about making high-value products such as electronics using carbon from coal or other fossil fuels, instead of burning them. This follows their earlier work on using coal to make electronics devices. Prof. Grossman says, “Now, we’ve broadened far beyond coal and both explored the benefits of other such “dirty carbon” sources like tar or pitch, and also demonstrated something very important that was not done before: the ability to process and control these materials using a laser. This means we can incorporate such materials in roll-to-roll or additive manufacturing processes.”
