Financial Support

DMSE graduate students receive financial support for their studies from a variety of sources, including outside fellowship programs (such as government fellowships, sponsorship by a private company, or competitive fellowship opportunities), special programs, or from the Department. Support from the Department can take three forms: a research assistantship (RA), a teaching assistantship (TA), or a Departmental fellowship. The Department offers fellowships to incoming first-semester graduate students. After that, student support may be from RAs, TAs, or fellowships.

DMSE will provide supplemental funding to students entering with outside fellowships that are less than those provided by MIT.

Research and teaching assistant appointments are only available to regular full-time students registered for an advanced degree.

The Department uses great care in the admissions process to match the number of admitted students to the total number of expected assistantships and fellowships.

Financial support situations vary; after admissions decisions are made, students can contact the DMSE Academic Office with specific questions.
