For Current Students
To be awarded a graduate degree, students must demonstrate depth of knowledge and mastery of a specific area or topic. This knowledge and experience is gained through lectures in the core curriculum, classwork in elective subjects, lab work, and focused experimentation. Doctoral students must pass examinations on the core subject areas in the field and must write and defend a thesis. Information about pursuing a graduate degree in MIT's Department of Materials Science and Engineering can be found in these pages, by contacting the Academic Office (dmse-gradoffice@mit.edu), or by consulting the MIT Registrar's Office.
