3rd INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE in EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES IN NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING (NDT) & TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER AND BUSINESS  PARTNERSHIP EVENT May 26-28, 2003, Thessaloniki, Greece. The competitive trends of world economy and markets globalisation are driving NDT to a new exiting phase. Within this phase, NDT has become an indispensable tool for quality, safety and productivity. Quality, nowadays, is used primarily as a weapon against competition and not as fundamental requirement. Safety is not any more the only requirement of process industry. Instead, operating more efficiently and more productively is a must for any industry. Risk estimation combining both the probability of failure and the consequences of failure, sets the new directions in inspection practices and the new standards for cost effective NDT technology and condition monitoring. On the other hand, life assessment and fitness for service sets the new directions and standards for reliable NDT. This conference aims to be a vital source of information for all parties involved in NDT. For questions about presenting a paper please contact Vasilios Nikou.

Second annual Summer Institute in the Materials Science of Material Culture (SIMSMC) With support from the National Science Foundation, MIT will convene the second annual SIMSMC. Fifteen faculty members from liberal arts colleges around the country, representing fields from art history to physics, will participate during the two-week period, 9-20 June 2003. The job of the Summer Institute is to encourage and assist faculty at liberal arts colleges in introducing materials science and engineering to their undergraduate curricula. As an example of how such curricular innovation can be accomplished, we will demonstrate the effectiveness of archaeological science as a vehicle for combining materials science and the human sciences. Inquiries may be addressed to materialculture@mit.edu.
