Abstract
Designs for bicycle-powered appliances are proliferating through the Internet and
organized projects like MIT’s D-Lab and Fab Lab. We propose that bicycle-
powered appliances should share a common way of connecting to bicycles. We
believe this modularity will result in increased use of the appliances. We present
a design for a standard physical interface to connect bicycles to a wide range of
appliances. Our design requires no modification to the bicycle and can be
transported on the bicycle. We plan to implement examples of connecting our
standard power take off (PTO) to existing appliances such as kitchen appliances,
electrical generators, mills, pumps, and water purifiers.
