Research interests include prehistory of eastern Africa from the earliest Early Stone Age to the advent of agriculture and pastoralism (Pastoral Neolithic). Particular interests include stone technology, the chemical study of obsidian sources and artifacts in Kenya and northern Tanzania, the nature of the Middle to Later Stone Age transition and the advent of modern human behavior, and the nature of Pastoral Neolithic settlement and burial practices.

Robert H. Richards, the first department head, appears in The Technologists, a 2012 novel by Matthew Pearl.
